Constructed in the early 1700s, historic Putnam Cottage was a family home, a tavern, and a meeting place that saw such great Revolutionary War figures as George Washington, and General Israel Putnam pass through its doors. Simple, square, and red in appearance, the house is best known for its annual re-enactment of Putnam's famous escape from the British forces. It lies about 25 miles up the coast from New York City, near the Greenwich Country Club.
